Three ships hit by the Houthis over the weekend

Three ships caught on fire after being hit by projectiles off Yemen over the weekend.

An Antigua-flagged general cargo ship called Noorderney was struck by a missile 83 nautical miles southeast of Aden and caught fire on Saturday. The fire was later contained. A second missile was sighted but did not hit the ship. Persons onboard small boats in the vicinity opened fire on the ship during the incident, according to UK maritime security consultants Ambrey. 

Another incident 70 nautical miles southwest of Aden also took place on Saturday when the MSC-controlled 5,400 teu Tavvishi boxship was struck with a subsequent fire onboard.

A third missile attack was reported on Sunday afternoon. The strike on the unnamed ship also resulted in a hit, but the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call. The incident occurred about 90 nautical miles to the southwest of Aden, near Djibouti. 

On all three strikes, there were no casualties reported. 

Another two ships were targeted on Friday, with no hits recorded. 

More than 100 ships have been targeted by the Houthis from Yemen in their seven-month campaign against merchant shipping in a show of support with Hamas’s ongoing war with Israel.
