Oman Drydock to enter shipbuilding sector

Middle Eastern ship repair giant Oman Drydock Company is planning to enter the shipbuilding sector.

The new CEO of the seven-year-old state-backed facility, Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, told the Oman Observer, “In a strategic move to continue the evolution of our operations and given our location, facilities, skill-set and the continuous commitment to deliver excellence, we are now looking at entering the world of shipbuilding.”

As well as repair the Duqm-based yard has carried out a number of ship conversions since it was founded, with initial help from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), in 2011.

The newbuild focus will focus on smaller ships such as OSVs, tugs and barges.

Oman Drydock also has plans to add a new floating dock as well as a floating crane to go alongside its existing pair of drydocks.
