New Delhi spending to develop strategic Iranian port
New Delhi approved yesterday plans to spend $150m developing Chabahar port in neighbouring Iran. Discussions to develop the port in the southeast of Iran have been ongoing for a number of years.
The port will provide Afghanistan with an alternative export/import destination to Pakistan and create new trade links into Central Asia. To begin with, two terminals will be built at Chabahar, which will rival Pakistan’s Gwadar port for primacy in the region.
An Indian port is likely to be given management rights to the new port.
