MSC brings in $40 per teu Arabian Gulf war risk surcharge

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has become the latest liner to institute a war risk surcharge for all cargoes moving to and from the Arabian Gulf. The move follows CMA CGM and X-Press Feeders adding charges in the wake of six tanker attacks in and around the Strait of Hormuz over the last two months.

MSC is charging $40 per teu, $4 more than CMA CGM, for all cargoes calling Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the Saudi Arabian ports of Dammam and Jubail and to the United Arab Emirates. The surcharge kicks in for all trades on July 8 apart from to and from the US and China, which will start on August 1.

Other liners contacted by Splash in recent days have said they are reviewing the situation in the Gulf with more carriers expected to follow suit.
